Basic Function

The Plant Project Design Group Supervisor will provide direction and support for a team of E&I and Piping designers and document control clerks, manage engineering costs associated with small capital project design activities, serve as the gate keeper to MEC for project expense programs work as well as capital support work executed with MEC. This position will focus on tactical as well as strategic issues and will engage across the entire La Porte complex and with multiple levels of site leadership.

The Plant Project Design Group Supervisor must be self- motivated at initiating contacts within and outside the company to gather and/or develop information necessary to perform the job function. The successful candidate should be able to interface and communicate effectively with all types of plant and project management. Strong results oriented, impact and influence skills are essential.

Roles & Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this position includes but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides oversight to Plant Project Design Group to accurately manage and approve timesheets, provide performance feedback to designers, ensure design work is progressed to completion by agreed upon due dates and at estimated costs.
  • Responsible for the hiring and release of designers based on project design workload as well as based on designer performance factors to ensure adequate support is provided to all projects.
  • Serves as gatekeeper for engineering work that will be executed with the MEC organization.
  • Develops a process to review and identify new work that could be executed with MEC before it starts.
  • Oversees distribution of workload within the Plant Project Design Group. This can include determining which projects could be worked outside by other LYB resources or through utilization of Houston area engineering services vendors.
  • Oversees the preparation of, maintain and manage LyondellBasell's electronic and hardcopy documents, correspondence and related data associated with the engineering, design and construction of projects in accordance with LyondellBasell's project procedures.
  • Serves as the La Porte Complex's subject matter expert in areas of Design Drafting and related issues.
  • Develops and maintain policies and procedures that align with Global Project Engineering (GPE) for all projects.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures related to Document Control and Design Drafting.
  • Develops and apply work processes or tools which will improve the productivity of the Plant Project Design Group.
  • Supports Turnaround expense projects on an as needed basis and provide design support to the Turnaround organization for discovery scopes of work identified during turnarounds or outages

Min. Qualifications

Skills/Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma with 10 years relevant experience OR an engineering degree with 7 years relevant experience. Must be in Refining or Petrochemical environment or oil & gas industry related client in an engineering project group setting.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without Visa sponsorship.
  • Knowledge of project engineering and construction best practices.
  • Experience working in a stage gated project methodology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with competency in results orientation as well as impact and influence.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both through written and verbal methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Familiar with AutoCAD, Documentum, and In Tools
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to coach and mentor group members.
  • Ability to work in a team environment involving multiple cultures.
  • Good working knowledge of all types of drawings.
  • Good working knowledge of applicable ANSI & API standards.
